Colin pipped in doubles semi-final in Germany
Colin O'Brien (MLTC) and partner Barry King (Fitzwilliam LTC) were pipped by Jebavy(CZE) & Lustig(CZE) in the doubles semi-final of the F4 Futures in Nussloch, Germany last Friday (5th Feb). In a very tight match, their opponents won through with a scoreline of 0-6, 6-3, and then 10-6 in the champion's tie-break (played instead of a third set). The Czech Republic pairing went on to win the final the following day 6-3, 7-6.
Colin & Barry had a tremendous win in the quarter-final over Gilles Muller & Mike Scheidweiler (both Luxembourg) on the Thursday. They shared the first two sets 6-4, 1-6 before the Irish pair won the deciding champions tie-break 10-6.
Gilles Muller is one of the top male players ever to come from Luxembourg, having been ranked as high as 59 in the world in singles at one stage.
In the singles, Colin came very close to beating the #2 seed Niels Desein (BEL) in the first round. The Belgian, who has a current world singles ranking of 215, won 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 and subsequently went on to win the tournament.

Colin had a very successful year in 2009, having won four ITF Futures doubles titles (three in Britain and one in Greece) and reaching one final, one semi and eight qtr finals in singles. On top of these performances, he also represented Ireland twice in Davis Cup, vs. Algeria in March and Cyprus in July.
His world ranking career high is 348 in doubles and 604 in singles (achieved on 18th Jan '10).
