James Cluskey Announces Retirement from Professional Tennis

James Cluskey , Honorary Member of Malahide Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, has today announced his retirement from the professional tennis tour.

In 2004 James won the U18 national singles title and in 2005 he moved to the US where he played college tennis for Louisiana State University for four years. He played his first Futures match in Limerick in 06 and made his debut for Ireland playing in the Davis Cup against Slovenia in the same year.

In 2009 he turned pro and in 2010 he won four Futures doubles titles, three of them partnering compatriot Colin O’Brien who is also an Honorary Member of the Club.

James has represented the Irish Davis Cup team on nine separate occasions since his first appearance in 2006 and has always been a great ambassador for the sport in Ireland.

He reached a career high doubles ATP ranking of 145 in 2014 and after a year which saw him qualify for his first ever ATP event at the Swedish Open, at the age of 29 he has officially announced his retirement from the tour.

We wish James well for the future and look forward to seeing him here in the club

Stockholm Event

Malahide LTCC competed in its first Centenary Tennis Clubs International Seniors event in Kungl LTC (Royal Stockholm LTC) on 26th and 27th September.

The team of Michael Nugent, Murrough O'Brien and Florian Plass competed in the spectacular Swedish facility which boasts 25 indoor courts (some equipped with Hawkeye) and includes a 5,000 seat Centre Court where Berdych, Federer and Co will play the ATP Stockholm Open in a few weeks.

In terms of the tennis, the standard was very high as expected. The Swedish men were all either ex pros or are world ranked vets. Florian and Murrough went down to the Swedes in their singles but Michael had an excellent win in what was the match of the weekend against a player who had beaten 'the Ireland #1' 6/2 6/2 in the recent World Vets Championships. A Champions Tie Break was played at 1 set all in all matches and Michael won via this route in a staggering 2 hours and 45 minutes for 2 sets and a tie break. Both Michael and Florian won tight singles v the Dutch and Murrough won the doubles over them with a Swedish player that guested for Malahide, again on a Champions tiebreak. Interestingly of the 7 matches the Malahide team won over the weekend, 4 were via Champions tie breaks and overall the team was 6/0 in tiebreaks. Fine margins. Both the Swedes and Dutch play far more singles than doubles at this level and our veteran tennis has a heavy doubles emphasis which also showed in the results.

The surface itself was indoor cement, which the Malahide players found punishing physically, the constant sudden stopping, (no sliding or give in the surface at all) over the course of practise on Friday and then 4 matches over 2 days was very hard on the feet and legs, just not what we are used to.

Overall Royal Stockholm took 1st place, with Malahide beating the Dutch (from Lemonias LTC, The Hague) by 2 points for 2nd place.

The team was looked after superbly by the hosts in Kungl LTK, a fantastic Club.
